POLL - Tyre Choices

    I'd like to get the community's opinion on this.

    Would you think twice about running in a series if Racing: Soft tyres were not used and only Racing: Hard or Racing: Medium tyres were used?

    Currently, drivers may choose what compound of tyre they use, with most opting for the Soft tyre because it has the most grip and is generally the fastest tyre.

    But what if Soft tyres was banned and you were restricted to just the Hard compound? Or restricted to just the Medium compound? Would you think twice about running in that series?

    Using Hard or Medium compound tyres means less grip but also less pit stops and less thinking about race strategy.

    Would you welcome less pit stops and more on-track action with less strategy involved or do you still enjoy the current stable of racing?

    It does make any difference on the tires run in a series. If the series had mandatory hards to race on, that wound not change my mind about racing that series. If I'm interested in racing a series it does matter what tires are used i will race it!

    I believe that tire choice should not be stuck into one tire. I would not mind at all if soft tires are thrown out.

    To be perfectly honest, I don't enjoy racing under minimal grip situations. I no longer live in Alaska. If it's not fun, I won't waste my time, simple as that!

    I don't like any of the choices in the poll, so I'll give my opinion

    I prefer running tires that are realistic to a given car. Racing softs are realistic for Super GT (in '07 at Suzuka, the pole time was 1'49.8, so we need even stickier tires, or more downforce!) and LMP cars like the Peugeot 908, but they wear way too quickly. For GT1 type cars, I think sports tires are best (these cars have more than enough downforce to keep them stable in the corners). For lower/no downforce race cars, I like sports softs or racing hards (a V12 Vantage or SLS AMG on racing hards makes a great GT3 spec car, and a hot hatch on sports soft or racing hards makes a great touring car). For street cars, comfort tires give the most realistic grip (most super cars just barely pull more than 1g in cornering force, so sports hards are even a bit too much in some cases). For Formula cars, comforts hards, I feel, are most realistic.
    I wouldn't like it if soft tires were banned, but I also don't like how they are currently available in pretty much every series. I think tires should be looked at on a series by series basis, and I don't think drivers should discriminate against a series just because it doesn't use racing soft tires. I also don't think more grip is necessarily more fun, or provides better racing. Remember, passing generally happens under braking, or when a driver makes a mistake. The stickier the tires, the shorter the braking zones, and the less likely someone is to make a mistake :sHa_thumb2:

    I understand and am aware what you're referring to, my friend, but this poll is with future series' in mind. I had ideas of possibly running harder racing tyres in the Touring Car series to change things up a bit.

    I wanted to see what our great community here felt was best, that's all. :)

    I agree with a lot of the things said in this post.

    This is a community though and I'd love to hear what others think. I just want to cater the Touring Car series (in particular) as best I can to our great community. :)

    I think changing things up every now and then is a good thing. If u decide to remove racing softs from a class, and ppl don't like it, nothing is set in stone. Just to throw an idea out, what if softs were only allowed for qualifying?? Anyway, tire choice would not change my interest in a series, and if it did, I would let the the coordinator know my opinion. Also, In reference to the tc series, might it b better to ask the ppl that plan on running the series, rather then a forum wide poll?? Just as an example, my opinion shouldn't matter much If there are questions about the NASCAR series. Just my thoughts, hope there helpful and done nudge anyone the wrong way.

    I agree with a lot that has been said. I think the Event creator should have the freedom to create what he/she feels is the best for the Series. Some car choices don't need racing softs and would be both realistic and fun with a lessor tire. I tend to gravitate toward the 'very fast' race car's as my preference and those car's are usually more realistic with softs. Having multiple compounds to chose from is great for race strategy though so I will always advocate for giving the driver the option in a 'race car' based Series. Mixing things up by mandating more than one compound is interesting and wouldn't prevent me from entering a Series as long as the option tire wasn't ridiculous, i.e. hards on a 900hp LMP. Non race car Series' don't really interest me regardless what tire they run.

    A: Feel free to create any series in whatever fashion you wish. Attendance is the best indicator of acceptance

    B: The word Banned , has a negative stigma. Fact. "But what if Soft tyres was banned and you were restricted to just the Hard compound? Or restricted to just the Medium compound? Would you think twice about running in that series?"

    C: It would depend on the Series, as to whether or not restricting tires somewhat would make me not participate.

    D: You can definitely always count me out on anything running Comforts of any compund. As afar as I personally might stretch is Sports Soft on some low, low, powered cars such as Kei- cars.

    E: These are my Opinions, and I respect everyone else's

    I have, and allways will say: Racing on any tire other than a race tire is wrong. As this is a game and not real life, we tend to push the cars a little more than we would in RL. When there is no chance of getting hurt we do things that would not work in RL. So by stating on a race tire we can keep some of the contact down. I have zero problem running on any race tire. But the comfort and sport tire are a "no go" for me. Time trails are different and this is the place for them. So Calvin I guess I would say "Any race tire is fine with me" But it is the car/class and day that will decide if I run or not.

    For me I like the harder tires, especially with the new tire models. Limited grip can be a ton of fun, as you are always fighting on the edge of adhesion. Racing games like Grand Prix Legends made me into a better sim racer because of this awesome formula, high hp and no grip/downforce. You learned how to slid the car without hurting the car.

    Thanks for the feedback. I was using banned in a quote, un-quote sense. Guess I should've used these "" eh? Nothing should be taken away from drivers here, but I just wondered how drivers would feel if their tyre choices were limited. :)

    Not going to vote in this one as I feel I don't represent any kind of average driver here at TPRA. My tuning skills have improved to the point now that I don't have the skills and reflexes to keep up with the car performance levels (+600 PP) we regularly run here now. I think the majority of drivers participating now are all Division 1. The Soft tires can pretty well glue any car to the ground.

    Huh? The Mazda RX-7 TC series is below 600pp. Gar's new GTCC series features cars below 600pp (I think). :)

    The Laguna Seca race, I found myself at the back of the field again and I know my car was capable of more (goes where I point it and very stable and easy on tires) but just can't seem to get any more of myself. Not sure of the GTCC series you speak of, so I will check out the specs.

    Laguna I thhink has somewhat changed. It seems to me that ya got to turn in earlier (aim for da pink spots) ( that's a ... well I'm not gonna say it) and ya gotta lower your gears a little. Hope this may help. :) 77
